About Us1.jpg

The Wanganui Philatelic Society & Whanganui Stamp Club is a member of the NZ Philatelic Federation Central Region which was established in 1921.

A brief Club history (from NZPF website):
"Organised philately began in New Zealand with the formation of the (Royal) Philatelic Society of New Zealand in 1888. Early clubs are known to have existed in Dunedin (1892), Blenheim (1894), Auckland (1895), Wanganui (1896), Palmerston North (1899), Gisborne (before 1900), and Nelson (1902).
Little is known about these early societies and most appear to have had but a short life. Of our present day societies, the Royal (1888), Christchurch (1911) and Dunedin (1913) rank as the oldest continuous clubs.
After the First World War other societies were established: Wanganui (1921), Auckland, Manawatu, and Wellington (1922); Timaru (1928. "
Nonetheless, local tradition holds that the Wanganui/Whanganui Club has had an unbroken existence since 1896.

The current membership has a wide range of interests including thematic, postal history, first day covers, early and modern New Zealand, as well as general collecting.
The club has a varied programme and throughout the year there are a range of 1-page, 4-page and 8-page competitions for club trophies. There are also regular visits to different venues.
